LEADERSHIP STYLES AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN PLATEAU STATE MINISTRY OF LANDS, SURVEY AND TOWN PLANNING JOS, NIGERIA

The study examined how leadership styles influenced employee performance in Plateau State Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Jos. It was guided by a specific objectives which is to ascertain if autocratic and democratic leadership styles influence employee performance in the organization. The population of the study consists of all 89 employees of the organization. The study used questionnaire as its major instrument of data collection to achieve same. The instrument of data collection was subjected to face and content validity. Cronbach alpha method was used to establish the internal consistency of the questionnaire items which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.90. Descriptive statistics of mean (real limits of numbers) and standard deviation was used to analyse the data collected; while chi-square statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was revealed that autocratic leadership style to a high extent influenced employee performance and democratic leadership style to a very high extent influenced employee performance in the organization. It was therefore, recommended that, the use of autocratic leadership style in the organization should be situational in nature so as to serve as corrective measure, and democratic leadership style should be advocated in Plateau State Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Jos in order to allow employees participate in decision making for optimum job performance.
